NFL: Super Bowl XLIII

February 1st 2009 11:14
The Pittsburgh Steelers will win Super Bowl XLIII and their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy on the back of a brutal defence, an effective running game and the never-say-die commitment of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Super Bowl XLIII pits one of football's all-time powerhouse franchises against one renowned for mediocrity and failure. This Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers, on the verge of becoming the most successful Super Bowl team in history, take on the Arizona Cardinals, who have reached the big dance for the first time ever.

History would suggest that Pittsburgh will walk away victors in Super Bowl XLIII. It is tough to disagree when examining the match-up.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are, simply, a better team and on paper they could not have drawn a better match-up than Arizona. Pittsburgh are the top ranked defensive unit in the NFL with no obvious weaknesses. The defensive line are effective against both the run and the pass. The linebackers move with speed and finesse and play smart through the middle. The secondary can make plays and are rarely beaten for speed or strength. They are a tough unit to break down.

And it would seem doubtful that the Arizona offence, despite their obvious capability to score points, has the mix to do so. Kurt Warner has been outstanding under center this year and the receiving corps of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin have got the job done. The Cardinals, however, have no running game, ranking last in rushing throughout the regular season.

Such a one-dimensional offence should pose few problems for the brutal Pittsburgh defence.

While the Steelers offence doesn't have much flash about it, they do get the job done. The Steelers ranked 22nd in total offence but did so playing in a lot of bad weather without a need to score many points. Willie Parker is starting to find form, Santonio Holmes is a game winner and Ben Roethlisberger is an inspiration in the pocket, always prepared to take a hit for the good of the cause. Arizona's defence, which ranks in the third quadrant of NFL defences, could struggle to contain a multi-pronged Steelers attack.

Traders should look to side with Pittsburgh in the Match Odds and Handicap markets in Super Bowl XLIII. Pittsburgh can be wagered at 1.37 or greater in the Match Odds market while they can be taken giving 6.5 points at 1.83 or better.

Super Bowl XLIII is going to be brutal and won on defence. On that count, Pittsburgh look the only option.
